Health and Safety Policy for Islington Carpet Cleaners

Islington Carpet Cleaners is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, clients and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet, upholstery and property cleaning activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to managing risks and ensuring that all work is carried out safely and responsibly within the areas we serve.

Our Health and Safety Objectives

We aim to prevent injury, ill health and damage to property arising from our cleaning operations. To achieve this, we will identify and control risks, provide appropriate instruction and supervision, and ensure that health and safety considerations are an integral part of planning and delivering all cleaning services.

Management Responsibilities

Company management has overall responsibility for health and safety within Islington Carpet Cleaners. Management will ensure that appropriate resources are made available to implement this policy and to maintain safe working conditions. This includes providing suitable equipment, establishing clear procedures, and reviewing performance regularly to support continual improvement.

Managers and supervisors are responsible for ensuring that employees understand and follow the company’s health and safety arrangements, that risk assessments are completed and acted upon, and that any concerns raised by staff or clients are investigated and addressed promptly.

Employee Responsibilities

Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions. Staff must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, and cooperate fully with the company’s health and safety arrangements.

Employees must report accidents, near misses, hazards, defects in equipment and any health concerns that may affect their ability to work safely. Staff are expected to attend training sessions, wear the required personal protective equipment and uphold high standards of professionalism at all client locations.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before commencing work, suitable risk assessments will be carried out for our cleaning services, including carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, stain removal, hard floor care and related activities. These assessments will identify potential hazards such as slips and trips, electrical risks, manual handling, chemical use and lone working.

Controls will be implemented to reduce risks to an acceptable level. These may include safe systems of work, use of appropriate equipment, scheduling tasks to minimise disruption to clients, and ensuring adequate lighting and signage where work is in progress.

Use of Cleaning Chemicals

Islington Carpet Cleaners uses professional cleaning products which are selected with due regard to both effectiveness and safety. Safety data for all chemicals will be available to employees, and relevant hazards and control measures will be explained.

Staff will follow manufacturer instructions at all times, including correct dilution, application and contact times. Chemicals will be stored safely and kept away from children, pets and food preparation areas. Containers will be clearly labelled, and decanting into unmarked bottles is not permitted. Adequate ventilation will be maintained when using cleaning products, and personal protective equipment will be worn where required.

Equipment Safety and Maintenance

All machinery, including carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, pumps and associated tools, will be maintained in a safe condition and inspected regularly. Damaged or defective equipment will be taken out of service immediately and reported to management for repair or replacement.

Employees will receive guidance on correct operation, transportation and storage of equipment. Electrical leads will be routed to minimise trip hazards, and portable equipment will only be used with safe and appropriate power supplies. Where necessary, barriers or warning signs will be used to alert others to ongoing cleaning work.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying and moving equipment, hoses and furniture. To reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, employees will be instructed in safe manual handling techniques, including how to assess loads, avoid unnecessary lifting and use mechanical aids or team lifting where appropriate.

Work will be planned to minimise repetitive strain and awkward postures. Staff are encouraged to report any discomfort or early signs of strain so that working methods can be reviewed and adjusted.

Personal Protective Equipment

Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, Islington Carpet Cleaners will provide suitable personal protective equipment such as gloves, masks, eye protection and protective footwear. Employees must use this equipment as instructed, keep it in good condition and report any loss or defects so replacements can be arranged.

Working in Client Premises

When working in homes, offices or other premises, our staff will act with care and respect. Before starting work, they will identify potential hazards such as loose floor coverings, fragile items, pets and restricted access routes. Clients will be informed of any relevant safety measures such as wet floor areas or temporary trip hazards from hoses and cables.

Where children, vulnerable adults or pets are present, extra care will be taken to prevent access to equipment, chemicals and work areas. All work areas will be left safe, tidy and free from obvious hazards on completion of the job.

Training, Information and Supervision

Islington Carpet Cleaners will provide appropriate health and safety training relevant to each employee’s role. This may include induction training, task-specific instructions, refreshers and updates when new equipment or products are introduced.

Supervision will be provided to ensure that employees apply their training correctly and maintain a high standard of safe working. Information on hazards, procedures and emergency arrangements will be communicated clearly and updated when necessary.

Accidents, Incidents and Emergency Procedures

All accidents, incidents, near misses and cases of work-related ill health must be reported and recorded. Where appropriate, investigations will be carried out to identify root causes and to implement measures that prevent recurrence.

Employees will be made aware of emergency procedures, including actions to take in the event of fire, electrical failure, chemical spillage or sudden illness. First aid supplies will be available, and staff will know how to obtain further assistance when required.

Monitoring and Review of this Policy

This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and reviewed periodically to ensure it remains suitable for the range of cleaning services we provide and the environments in which we work. Feedback from employees and clients will be considered as part of this review, and reasonable improvements will be implemented where possible.

By working together, Islington Carpet Cleaners, its employees and its clients can help maintain safe and healthy conditions while delivering reliable and professional cleaning services across our operating area.
